Video-compression technology that ensures high-quality pictures without the need for hardware upgrades is being developed by researchers at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen.
Digital compression technology, which takes the form of codecs, renders a video image into a small-enough size for TV transmission, internet streaming or DVD storage. Getting the compression correct is essential to television picture quality. However, current limitations mean it is not possible to achieve the best-possible picture quality without expensive hardware upgrades for the end user.
Led by Prof Iain Richardson, the team is working on a PC platform in which video compression algorithms can be automatically configured and adapted to suit the streamed video sequence being sent. The method has already received interest from major companies in the US, UK and China.
Richardson said: 'It is only in the last three or four years that people have made widespread use of video streaming on the web. Combined with an increasing number of formats such as PCs, TVs and mobile devices, the challenge of picture quality has come to the fore.
'Currently, all these devices have to support multiple compression formats that are incompatible with each other and increase the cost of the device. When a new format comes along you either have to throw away your box or download an upgrade and this acts as a barrier to innovation of faster and better compression formats.
'One of the main advantages of our approach is that it cuts the cost of the chip set. It also provides companies that want to develop a new method of video compression with a method to quickly get that out into the market.'
The team has been developing a prototype for more than a year and will release a second version in the next few weeks. According to Richardson, the latest prototype will be five times faster and will be presented to UK standardisation bodies later this year.
